Central Worcester is divided into two parishes, All Saints and Old St Martin's, each with its own parish church and church council. These two parishes are united into one "Benefice" (i.e. they are served by one Rector) to form the City Parish. The City Parish consists of the whole of the commercial centre of Worcester, together with some residential areas outside the historic core. Within the Parish are also the College of Technology, Guildhall, and the Crowngate and Lychgate Shopping Centres. The resident population is about 2,300. Some 15,000 students use the College, and many people come into the city to work, or as shoppers or tourists. The ministry of the City Parish is divided between those who live and work in the Parish, and those who worship in the churches. The City Parish has signed the City Centre Churches Covenant and plays an active part in working together with partner churches of other denominations. The two parish churches offer markedly different styles of worship. At Old St Martin's Church the Eucharist is celebrated regularly in a Modern Catholic liturgy. Services of Benediction and Stations of The Cross are held occasionally. At All Saints' we are building a centre of evangelical worship with services of Word & Worship or Evening Prayer alternating with Holy Communion. For service times, see below. |
